The Plaza is the tallest hotel downtown, and before the construction of the Fremont Street Experience it towered at the end of Fremont like a giant altar. Now the Experience blocks your view of most of the hotel. There is a bus station in the hotel, so if you arrive by bus in Vegas, you may well end up here. Of course, this means that so will all the other grungy people you wanted to get away from on the bus the whole trip. This is the first hotel I stayed at in Vegas, many years ago when I was broke and hadn't yet discovered the joys of gourmet room service. The whole place was kind of dingy and worn, but the rooms were clean, and if you are lucky enough to have a room facing south on a decent floor, the views of The Strip are pretty nice. The prices are right as well, this is a very inexpensive hotel compared to the Strip monstrosities. Like the casino, the occupants are kind of worn out. I didn't see many happy people here, everyone kind of had a look about them like they were trying to win money to take the bus home. If you want to see young, attractive, happy gamblers, go somewhere else. Service here ranged from friendly to surly depending on the time of day. This is not somewhere you go to be taken care of. Most guests here firmly believe that the hotel room is just somewhere to crash when the sun comes up and you've finally drunk too much booze. They don't expect much, and the hotel is happy to meet expectations. The food here is for eating, not savoring, but it's (let me know if I get repetitive) not expensive either. All in all, this is a decent hotel if you're just looking for a room, or looking to save some dough for the tables.
