The Golden Nugget was recently sold to the boys at Landry Restaurants, and based on my experience there, these guys don't know much about hotels. For decades the Golden Nugget was the class of downtown. They've held a 4-star rating for almost as long as I've been alive, and the gleaming white facade just gives an impression of elegance and sophistication from the outside. That all changes when you get inside though. The room selection is limited. I arrived, looking forward to a non-smoking King room, and was told I could have one or the other, but not both.. When I went down the next morning to try and change rooms I was in line with nearly 10 other guests, all doing the exact same thing. That's not a good sign that such a small hotel has so many guests looking to trade up. The staff really did not give the impression that they were happy to have you staying at their hotel. The night time staff could be downright rude (particularly the Valet folks), and while the daytime staff was much more polite, they still would not go even the slightest bit out of their way to help you. I was in the lobby to see the front desk staff sit and watch as a withered old lady in a wheelchair tried... to... inch... her... way... up... the... handicapped... ramp... but... she... wasn't... strong... enough... to... make... it... When it became apparent the staff would not help I pushed her up the ramp myself. She was grateful, the staff couldn't seem to care less. The Golden Nugget charges for it's rooms as if it were a "nice" hotel, but part of that is having staff who act like they care. For these rates, I could stay somewhere on The Strip and be treated a lot better. The beds were pillow-tops, and were comfortable. The room service was fairly inexpensive, and decent. The 24-hour cafe food was good, but for some reason it took them 10 minutes and more hand signals then a World Series game to get us seated when the joint was less then a quarter full, and the staff was hanging out talking about their plans over the weekend... I can see where the Nugget used to be a really great hotel, and compared to the places usually available in downtown maybe it still is by comparison, but compared to even a cheap discount place on The Strip it really doesn't hold up. Compared to a place like The Orleans it doesn't even come close to matching service or welcoming nature. I won't be back. |
