Surviving Las Vegas

I get into discussions a lot about Las Vegas, because the people I work with know I like to go there as often as I can. Typically, at some point the following will work it's way into every discussion:

"How long were you in Vegas last time?"
"Uh... 6 days. We would have stayed longer, but the room rates went up too high that last saturday."
"Wow... usually I can't stay more then 2 or 3 days. After that I'm really ready to go home."

I laugh, because I know exactly why they feel this way. Here is my advice to those of you who are really looking for some time away from home, but don't want to end up wishing you could go home sooner.

  1. DON'T GAMBLE SO GOD DAMN MUCH IN ONE SITTING!
I see people all the time who arrive talking about how they are going to play blackjack for 30 hours before they even check into their room. Here's the thing, those tables aren't going away. If you only play for a few hours, you'll still be able to play some more in the morning. Or after dinner. Or before dessert. Or on your way to the bathroom. Or at the Walgreens. Or at the Airport. Or in Church. You will always be able to gamble when the mood strikes, so save some of your money and energy and mental power and take some freakin' breaks already, will you?
  2. DON'T DRINK SO GOD DAMN MUCH IN ONE SITTING!
This is the other thing I see. Plane lands, people get their luggage, and the first thing they talk about is hitting the bar on the way to their 30-hour blackjack binge. The booze will ALWAYS be there. You don't need to drink it like Prohibition is coming back. Try staying sober for just a couple of hours a day, and you'll increase your ability to stay in Vegas a lot. You'll make less stupid decisions at the tables as well.
  3. DRINK MORE GOD DAMN WATER!
Vegas is a desert, and you are in air conditioned air all the time, so you get dried out real bad. Drink at least 6 or 8 small bottles of water a day and you'll feel a lot better. And whatever you do, don't drink those $12 bottles of water in your hotel room. Visit one of the many small stores on the Strip that sells bottled water, and buy some. Keep it in your room. Heck, the cocktail waitresses will even bring you a bottle of water if you ask.
  4. GET SOME GOD DAMN SLEEP!
Yes, Vegas never closes (although they do shut the lights off on a lot of the major landmarks at about 3:00am.) But just because THEY never stop doesn't mean you can't. You'll enjoy yourself a lot more if you get a bit of sleep every now and then. You'll be more mentally capable as well, and thus do better at many games then you would otherwise.

Vegas is a hell of a lot of fun, and if you just take some of my advice you won't get back home feeling like you need a rest to recover from your vacation.
