In Downtown Las Vegas is a little casino called Mermaids. Inside Mermaids are a bunch of slot machines, a lot of people losing their money, and a Nathans in the back with two extra items on the menu. You can get a Deep-fried Twinkie, or a deep-fried Oreo Cookie for a buck. Both are coated in a thick, sweet batter, deep fried, and drowned in powdered sugar. In both cases, the coating is pretty crisp, and the cookie/twinkie basically melts to form a custard-like filling. The oreo was actually pretty good. The twinkie didn't thrill me at first, but it's grown on me since, I find myself wondering if I really gave it a fair shot the first time around. I think both items would be better with a slightly thinner batter, and they could stand to run a damp rag over the kitchen, but for a buck or two this will help ease the tummy-rumblings caused by too much booze and too many loose women. Well worth trying, at least once. |
